In one of the most pointless trades ever made in the history of Major League Baseball, the Yankees have acquired Eric Hinske from the Pirates for two minor leaguers. Hinske was upset in Pittsburgh because he was not getting enough playing time. I am not quite sure where the playing time will come in for the Yankees. Hinske is a corner infielder as well as an outfielder. With Alex Rodgriguez and Mark Teixeira filling the corner positions in the infield, and with the Yankees already having 4 outfielders in Johnny Damon, Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher, and Melky Cabrera, Hinske most likely will not be seeing much playing time as a Yankee either. However, being in the American league, and with Hideki Matsui diminishing with each passing second, Hinske can certainly step in as the DH to give Matsui more rest.
Joe Girardi being the manager he is, will probably end up giving all the outfielders too many days off in order to slot Hinske into the lineup. Five outfielders is certainly a lot though.
I am sure we will see Hinske a bit but this was a pretty pointless trade overall.
I agree. A pointless trade. But it got a lot of coverage like the Yankees typically do. Sports Satire - Study Reveals Pro Baseball Exists Outside New York, Boston
