It has been a while since I spoke about the Giants but there is some news that is noteworthy. I don’t think I would qualify as a good GM necessarily but I still think many would find it odd to find out that Rhet Bomar, a QB qho was drafted this year by the NY Giants was given a 4 year contract. There is not a ton of money involved by any stretch but 4 years seems like quite a long time for someone who is competing for a 3rd string position. But its not really worth getting into a huge discussion about.
Another draft pick in Ramses Barden was also given a 4 year contract. He is 6′6″ and has great hands and it seems like he would be the perfect fit to fill the Plaxico Burress vacancy. However this 4 year contract comes after the Giants were not impressed with Barden’s speed in OTA’s. He was very slow off the line and could not break away in coverage. I think he can certainly develop into a quality player as do the Giants but I found it interesting that after the Giants came to the conclusion that his rooke season will most likely be spent on the practice squad, they would give him a 4 year deal. It should be good in the long haul though.
The biggest news though comes with the information regarding Michael Boley. Boley was a huge signing for the Giants this year and is a big asset to the Giants Linebacking core. Unfortunately, he recently underwent surgery to repair a torn hip flexor and will be out 8-10 weeks. In other words, he will miss all of training camp and is questionable for opening day. So he should be able to play most of the season but he will not have the opportunity to really get used to Bob Sheridan’s defensive style since he will not be playing. Even if he starts every game, it could be a few weeks before we see the Boley we expected.
That pretty much sums everything up. But as an added note and in relation to this, any team (other than the Giants of course) who needs a wide receiver can get a great cheap fee agent sleeper in Amani Toomer. His stats were down last year only because of the emergence of Steve Smith. Toomer has great hands and is a great playmaker and can really come through on 3rd downs which is what he did for the Giants until Steve Smith came along. Toomer was Eli’s go to guy on third downs an he always came through. There were a few drops that he would not have made earlier in his career but a team can without doubt sign Toomer to a 1 or 2 year deal and get great production from him. It is a shame he has fallen so far under the radar but he would be a great asset to any team.
